El alemánico o alamánico pertenece, junto al bavaroaustríaco, a la rama denominada alto alemán de la familia de las lenguas germánicas. El nombre deriva de la antigua alianza germánica de tribus conocida como los Alamanni (de donde vienen también el nombre francés Allemagne, el español y vasco Alemania, el gallego y asturleonés Alemaña, el aragonés y el catalán Alemanya, el portugués Alemanha y el turco Almanya, todos nombres de Alemania).
